Dressing Miss Universe
Project by Natasha DwyerProject Description
The Project.
I have been invited to create and design Miss Universe Australia's national costume. I can not begin to explain how privileged, honoured and proud I feel to be given this opportunity to represent Australia through fashion.
Newly crowned 2010 Miss Universe Australia, Jesinta Campbell will wear my gown on the centre stage at Donald Trump and NBC's International competition final in Las Vegas on 23rd August 2010. Annually there are 3 billion Miss Universe viewers and as a result, presents innumerable international media opportunities.
The organisers of Miss Universe Australia has "asked me to keep this project top secret, the gown will revealed on the 29th July 2010 at the official launch party."

National Costume Event.
Theatrical in nature, the national costume is a vital segment in the pageant, that allows each contestant to express their individual cultures. The National Costume Event is an opportunity to highlight one of Australia's premier design talents. This is the costume that Miss Universe Australia will wear as she presents herself to the world at the commencement of the pageant.
The costume I plan on making for Miss Universe Australia will ooze our rich, unique landscapes by contrasting textures and fabrics. I hope to use elements that are iconic to Australia and want to show our indigenous heritage through colour and mix media.

My Story.
After completing my diploma in fashion design in 2004, I was quickly snapped up by design house Bang to assist the head designer of their sister label Messina. One year later their doors shut, so I decided to open one big heavy door for myself. With no more than a couple of dollars to my name; a shamless confidence and an eye for colour - I took myself to Bondi markets in the hope to make a fortune. With two sales and twenty dollars to my name, I somehow saw the glass half full! Arthur Ave by Ms Tash had begun!!
I quickly discovered there is a big difference between what you like and what the customer is willing to give you money for. Before too long, I ended up at the infamous Paddington markets along with hundreds of other hopeful designers. Like my idols, Dinnigan, Zimmerman – I believed the golden gates had finally opened. Three years later I was still sewing, selling, learning and loving fashion at Paddington every Saturday until one day I was ruthlessly thrown out on my little toosh - ending up at The Rocks Markets where you can find me today.
Along the journey I have had stockists come and go, won more than a handful of awards and met some fabulous fashionista's whom I have grown to love and adore.

This Tessuti award winning dress took Natasha to Paris in 2009.
Next Step.
I'm hoping you will join me in the next stage of my journey - to create and design Jesinta Campbell's national costume.
Part of being given this great honour comes a cost and I really need the financial support to help me along the way. I choose to use this platform because I want to involve the public in my project and take a part in our national costume.
I'm hoping once you see my work and past experience, you will put your trust and support in me to make my dreams come true - who know's we might just pick an award or two along the way.
I'm asking everyone in Australia to help me create something amazing, rememberable and a national costume to be proud of.
The money raised in this project will help towards the costs of fabrics, accessories, materials, related services, fees and expenses. I personally will not be making any money for designing or creating the national costume, for me it's an honour to represent fashion in Australia through the Miss Universe competition.
<< My funding goal was reduced due to a significant contribution by the Miss Universe organisers - Thanks xox >>

My label Arthur Avenue is all about being fun and unconventional and is for anyone who loves fashion, has a unique sense of style and cares about the environment. Arthur Avenue garments are a blend of fabulous vintage fabrics and surprising design. Individuality and meticulous handcrafting means that these garments can be enjoyed not only from season to season, but also from generation to generation.
In the modern world of fashion, where most designers are endlessly trying to flog the 'latest look' this notion is both rare and refreshing. Recycled fabrics, trims and accessories play a big role at Arthur Avenue, adding a touch of quirkiness to each of the designs. The use of these materials means that you can enjoy beautiful clothing without having a negative impact on the environment.
Arthur Avenue is the brainchild of designer Natasha Dwyer. With a love of fashion, loads of creative talent and plenty of entrepreneurial zeal, Natasha set out to create a lively line of clothing from quality vintage and recycled fabrics. When designing for Arthur Avenue Natasha takes into account current trends, however she relies mostly on her creative vision and the world around her for inspiration. Since the task of sourcing vintage fabrics is becoming increasingly difficult, the impetus to create fabulous designs is paramount.
Planet Ark awarded Natasha for her talented use of recycled fabric in 2005. The figures of everyday women are also integral to Natasha's designs. Her knowledge of fabrics, design and various figure types means that these garments look equally amazing both on and off the catwalk.
The Arthur Avenue range currently includes one-off women's dresses, tunics and singlets. Beautifully embellished baby singlets are also available. The range is constantly evolving and Arthur Avenue looks set to become a very exciting fashion destination!
